6 New Zealand Places You Need to Visit
Are you ready to get away from the hustle and bustle of life? If so, then New Zealand is a great place for you. The country has some beautiful landscapes that will leave you in awe. Some of the best places to visit are Franz Josef Glacier, Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, Fox Glacier, Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, and Lake Tekapo.
Franz Josef Glacier
The Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations, and with good reason! It has a lot to offer visitors – hiking opportunities, swimming in its icy water, or seeing some wildlife from it (like if you’re really lucky, witnessing a glacier calving event!), and the best time of year to go is during summer when it’s warmer.

What other activities are there at Franz Josef?
There are many hiking opportunities and good spots for photography. You can also do some fishing near the river that flows from the lake into Lake Paringa on your way back up Mount Cook National Park towards either Mt Cook village or Aoraki/Mount Cook Village where you will find campgrounds and lodges with accommodation ranging from backpacker hostels to five-star hotels like Hotel Grand Chancellor Christchurch and Gibbston Valley Vineyard. The Franz Josef car park has toilets and a convenience store, but it doesn’t have public showers or laundry facilities like the other two locations mentioned above do.
There is plenty to keep you busy when visiting this spectacular location!
One of my favorite things about going here is seeing all different types of wildlife in their natural habitat as well as getting out into the wilderness on horseback riding tours for those who love horses. This place offers something that’s unique and not available anywhere else: an authentic Kiwi experience with activities such as Queenstown Helicopters’ Heli-hiking Mt Aspiring National Park where we take care of logistics so you can enjoy the flight and hike.
My favorite things about visiting this location are horseback riding tours, hiking opportunities, and wildlife viewing.
Milford Sound
Located on the South Island near Queenstown, Milford Sound offers visitors so much variety that they will never be bored! You can kayak alongside seals as well as watch dolphins swim by while you are cruising through these waters. The views along this coastline are truly beautiful whether you’re looking at Mounts Cook and Tasman or the Mitre Peak.

Fox Glacier
Located on the South Island, Fox Glacier is one of many glaciers that New Zealand has to offer. It’s a bit smaller than Franz Josef Glacier but this just means it doesn’t get as busy with tourists and offers you more privacy. If you’re looking for some adventure then trekking or mountain biking is something you can do here! You will be able to explore while surrounded by breathtaking views such as mountains so close they’ll touch your fingertips and an icy blue-green lake in front of you.
Doubtful Sound
Located on the South Island, Doubtful Sound is a stunning place to visit. It’s one of the most picturesque sounds with its deep blue water and snow-capped mountains all around it that will leave you in awe.
Doubtful Sound: One of New Zealand’s deepest fjords (or sound), this attraction offers visitors incredible views from both land and sea – so if you’re after something quieter than Franz Josef Glacier or Milford Sound, head here instead!
Aoraki Mount Cook National Park
This national park has some incredible hiking opportunities! It got its name from one of New Zealand’s tallest mountains Aoraki Mt Cook which towers over everything else in the area. You can hike up to the summit if you’re really feeling up to it, but there are also many other hikes available. This national park is also home to many glaciers which you will be able to explore while hiking.
